Originally sport jackets were designed specifically for wealthy men who participated in the sport of hunting game. Then termed the “Norfolk Jacket,” it was constructed with heavier weight cloths accompanied with a belt around the waist.

It was not until the 1920s sports jacket as we now know became popular.  It offered many similarities to the Norfolk Jacket, excluding the waist belt.   Today some of those same aesthetics remain such as elbow patches and patch pockets.
